Raw Jackfruit Curry/Kathal Curry Recipe

Ingredients for Raw Jackfruit Curry

  • Jackfruit - 400 grams
  • Cashew nuts - 50 grams ( 25 - 30)
  • Tomatoes - 300grams ( 4-5 )
  • Green chillies - 2 to 3
  • Ginger - 1 inch long piece
  • Refined oil - 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Jeera(cumin) - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander(dhaniya) powder - 1 tsp
  • Red chilly powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - add to taste (1 tsp)
  • Garam masala - 1/4 tsp
  • Green coriander - 1 tbsp(finely chopped)

How to make Raw Jackfruit Curry

Tell the shopkeeper to peel the jackfruit before you get it home. Wash jackfruit, apply some oil on your hands making them smooth. Now cut the jackfruit into 1-2 inch pieces.

Put the pieces of jackfruit in the cooker, add 1/2 glass water and 1/4 tsp salt then boil till 1 whistle goes off. You can also boil it in the microwave. Remove water from the boiled jackfruit pieces, also remove the skins from its seeds.

Tari : Break off the stems from the green chillies, peel ginger and wash, similarly wash tomatoes.

Soak cashew nuts in hot water for 30 minutes. Make a fine paste of the wet cashew nuts, tomatoes, green chillies and ginger.

Pour oil in a frying pan(kadhai) and heat. Lower the flame. Put Jeera in hot oil, after Jeera is roasted add turmeric powder, coriander powder and the masala paste. Fry all the spices till oil starts floating over them.

Put the boiled pieces of jackfruit in the fried spices and fry for 2 minutes. Add water accordingly(1 glass water) followed by salt and red chilly powder, mix all these ingredients well. Once the water comes to boil cook for another 3-4 minutes. Turn off the gas, put in Garam masala and mix.

Raw Jackfruit Curry is ready. Take out the curry in a bowl and garnish with green coriander. Serve hot Raw Jackfruit Curry with chapati, naan, parantha or rice.
